Official 2013 BMW Video about the E32

An elegant corporate video by BMW concisely discusses the general BMW design language for generations of BMWs to come - starting with the E32!

"This car is a wonderful example of a successful combination - of a remarkable design and high aerodynamic performance. With this car BMW took the first step towards a Premium brand.

The second generation BMW 7 Series (E 32) was introduced in 1987. The concept - an elegant and dynamic vehicle for the business class. It is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine delivering 188 horsepower, and up to 12 cylinders and 300 horsepower.

Hans Kerschbaum was significantly involved in the development of the BMW 7 series, first as a designer and later as head of aerodynamics. He created the design prototype (featured in the video).

The business customer may have someone to drive him. This led to an unusual shape of the E32 which you can see in the rear passenger area. The widest point of the car, in plan view, was over the rear doors - to give maximum space to the rear seats.

Many of his ideas are adopted, including the distinctive wide C-pillar which is intended to provide a stable and secure impression. Another striking detail is the rear side window with a raised edge.

The corner is a sharp edge which you do not have very often in a car. It is something which gives very easy and comfortable access into the interior.

The interior is dominated by luxury and technical comfort. A highline equipment offers various extras such as a refrigerator, telephone, and high grade leather. The exterior design characterises clear outlines that connect all sections of the car. The rear has a wide tailgate. And, for the first time in BMW history, the now-typical L-shaped rear lights appear.

This gives safety and security from the rear view of the car. And on this car, it was the first time BMW realised the L Lamps. Today you can see lamps like these on other BMW cars too.

For BMW, the E32 7-series is the entrance into the upper class. And for Hans, the culmination of his professional work. One of the best things he has made in his life!"

E32 BMW on BBC Top Gear <-- WATCH THIS!!

As the BBC TopGear boys - Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond - have now hilariously proven in their Top Gear Challenge... the BMW 7 series E 32 is virtually unstoppable.

Especially when THE STIG is in the pilot seat!

The Lexus LS, Suzuki / Isuzu-looking mini-SUV (Vitara??), and Fiat Coupe failed miserably in apprehending the mighty E32.
Perhaps this other youtube video further justifies why the BMW e32 is rock solid.

Anyway, check out this official BBC TOP GEAR UK video from the 1:20 mark onwards (climax with Clarkson at 5:10 where he gets destroyed by the (very) robust BMW E32):

James: I don't think he'll take Stigs alive.
(Jeremy deploys Roman-age vehicular weapon)
Jeremy: Now. Any second now...
(Crash! Boom! Bang! Clarkson's intentionally crashes his little Fiat coupe sideways into the BMW E32 and ends up riding the E32's rear wheel)
Jeremy: Ooh! That's uncomfortable!
Richard: I presume, at some point, there's gonna be a simply hideous accident.
James: Yep!
Jeremy: Come on! Yeah! Take that!
(Clarkson continues bashing sideways - until his wheel flies off his Fiat)
Richard: I think it could be time to admit failure.
James: See!
(Clarkson's wheel - dislodged by the E32 - flies right past them)
Richard: Whoa! That could have been (bad)...
Jeremy: Something's gone wrong with the handling!
(Clarkson pretending not to know that his Fiat has lost its wheel to the BMW E32)
James: You... failed... to apprehend the miscreant!
Jeremy: We are rubbish!
Richard: We are not very good...

That's 3-0 in favour of the BMW E32!!

What's the difference with the "L" version

The E32 car was also available in a stretched version (indicated by an 'L' after the model number), in which case an extra 11.4 centimetres (4.5 inches) of leg room was available to the rear passengers by stretching the rear doors, and the body at this point. It was featured in all years 1988-1994.

This magazine-reading model shows the clear legroom available in the "Langversion".

The best part is ... BMW's nifty steering system makes it easy to park this mother of cars into tight little parking lots!
The E32 manoeuvres with ease on the roads.

Owners' and Viewers' Testimonies for the E-32

"There's nothing like bimmers of the 80's."

"These are good cars. I've owned my 1988 735i for 8 years now with out a problem and it does have 300.000 miles on the clock."

"BMW IS EINFACH DAS BESTE und über Jahre Erfolgreich! I have the Same Car and Love it!"

"i have e32 730iL... i love it."

"My brother crashed his 750IL in 250 km/h, he survived with minor injuries. Superb car!!"

"very good for a 88 car!"

"A '93 740il saved my life!"

"Still happy that I chose to repair my 1994 740iL instead of donating it."

"I hate 1 thing, E32 is always sacrified in films and series as a trash car, though it's the best car ever built."

"Hahaha... bmw e32... its the best car in the world. I love it!"

"Amazing features for a car from the '80s - these features are only just now being available on newer upper tier cars! BMW sure did make a lot of amazingly cool innovations. I don't own a BMW, but sure do respect their amazing features - very nice!!"

"i've got a 7series and 5series bmw, and i think they are da best built cars ever. i've got the e34 model and e32 its just a joy to drive when u get it them and da drift u can do in them. BMW POWER ALL THE WAY."

"this is a great car and I can't bring myself to ever sell it."

"basically, a car from that time is better made than today's plastic toy style cars."

"i wish a brand new 7 series costs so little."

"all this tech back then?? wow."

"Oldies, but Goldies."

"i own one E32 735i with a manual gearshift,awsome car,pure fun and pleasure."

"Great car, pity they don't style cars anymore like this. These were cars for a person with taste."

"I've got the same and I can't get rid of it - there's no better car for me."

"the best 7 series in my opinion"

"Agree completely...! I am planing to buy 730i...!"

"Awesome car!"

"I used to have a car like this few years ago... Was so nice to drive, so comfortable..."

"There are some minor issues on these cars by now (wear & tear), but the E32 735i drives a lot better than you'd think. Like all BMW's, you can't just look at the numbers, you have to drive one to appreciate it."

"This is true beautiful, quality German engineering. :)"

"I have a 91 750 iL the one with the V12, and I have to say for its time it was ahead of its time..."

"this car has very nice interior for an old car! 3 my friends has those E32 beemers!"

"we are in 2010 ...and i`m looking to buy a car like this ...this is the coolest car ever."

"my e30 88 325is has 230,000 and I love it. I'll take the 7 too."

"i'm jealous, this is one of the best bmws ever produced."

"best car ever, my e32 is."

"Much better than the ageing Series 3 Jag, which was still in production in '85..."

"that has some design features that i don't even have on my car, like heated front screen to stop window wipers sticking, that is a great idea."

"I'd have either the older 7 series or the new (for 86) 7 series - pretty much anyone up to and including that 007 one."

"I love the sound of a bmw straight 6."

"I love this car, it's awesome."

"bloody hell how things are back then, a 3.5 litre luxury car hitting 60 in not much over 9 seconds!!"

"I have a 1989 735iL and it starts right up even in the winter (cold here in northern U.S. at times)."

"Amazing to see how advanced german cars have been. Many cars do not have what these ones had 20 year ago. My father bought a 1982 520i in 1988, and it was like getting on a freakin spaceship. The good/bad part is that when you get in one of these cars, you can't get down, everything else seems like a tin can. So as long as I can afford it I`ll keep my E39, love it."

"Great car I own a 735i with a manual gearbox, its done over 265 000 miles and the engine is running better than ever. The only work done to the engine since 1988 is a waterpump, belts and oil changes also I get 28 to the gallon. Best car I've had yet."

"Great cars. I have a '90 735i."

"I agree, I'm on my 2nd BMW 7 since 96 since I bought my first one which was an 88 735. My current 7 and by far the best car I've ever owned in my nearly 30 years of driving, is a 90 735iL. The comfort, performance and mpg (fuel economy) can't be beaten. It's got just over 220 on the clock and I could not be more pleased with it. No major engine issues in the 4 years I have owned it. Other than minor part replacement, it's been problem free."

"I agree. The only issues I have with mine are the occasional "Tail Light", "License Plate Light", or "1 Brake Light" alerts. Almost 192,000 miles and it runs, drives, and rides like a new car."

"the e32 is the most beautiful 7 series ever!"

"Everyone has their favorite in the 7 series, but mine was the E38, before they turned out that strange thing they call nowadays a 7 series. E32 nonetheless is a beautiful car, the first time I saw one of these as a kid I thought I was looking at a spaceship. Beautiful car."

"Used to own it! Not bad for a first car."

"Mine is '89 & the 1st & only problem I've experienced was the blower motor & heating matrix which to be fair have lasted a very long time without any trouble!
I'm just coming up on 198,000 miles (318,650 Kilometres) & she still runs like honey. Still a very fast car as it definitely does 0-60 in under 9 sec & it's an auto. I have hit 150mph several times this summer on my drive to Spain from Ireland & back leaving BMW 530d's behind. Felt amazing!"

"i love all of the small features of the car, too bad they don't make them like that anymore."

"I love my E32 735i and just great to see it around. It took me a while to find out all those little great toys haha. I have the 1989 one and they now cost much much more, surprised to see how cheap the first one of the E32 was. Kind of wish my E32 was new..."

"the e32 is brilliant. there's something about a well-kept e32 7 series, they are love affair cars."

"i have one of these highway missiles and personally its the best car ever made."

"Classic!!"

"tons of features especially for its era!"

Evolution of E32

Found on the web:

"The BMW E32 replaced the first generation 7 series, the E23 (below).

The E32 itself was replaced by the E38 (above) in May 1994, although the engines developed for the E32 continued to be used in updated form.
The E34 5 series (above), introduced in 1987, is externally very similar to the E32, and many parts are shared between the two cars. (That's good news in terms of spare parts!)

The M30 engine's bottom end is virtually 'bulletproof' and a true workhorse. The M30's timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine and it will if the timing chain tensioner is maintained. Over time and use, the plastic parts in it can fail but they are easily replaced. With regular cooling system maintenance, oil changes, and other routine maintenance, the M30 can routinely run well past 250,000 miles.

Introduced with the E32, was the 3.0 L (2986 cc) M30B30 which produced 188 hp. The engine continued in production until 1994."
